Luther Seminarys FirstThird Dialogues - Ministering to Children of Divorce
9/23/2010 - 9/29/2010 ; United States
The next conference in Luther Seminarys series of FirstThird Dialogues is titled Ministering to Children of Divorce, intended for those on the front-lines of ministry with children and youth who know the realities of divorce. Come and share your expertise and learn from others about the issues surrounding divorce and approaches that are working to create communities of health and healing with and for those affected by divorce.
Andy Root, author of The Children of Divorce: The Loss of Family as the Loss of Being, suggests that divorce has consequences for teens and tweens in their very being. Therefore, this is not simply a youth or childrens ministry issue, but an entire church issue. Andy is alerting the church to this reality and calling churches to be part of the healing.
Elizabeth Marquardt, author of Between Two Worlds: The Inner Lives of Children of Divorce, suggests that While divorce is sometimes necessary, even amicable divorces sow lasting inner conflict in the lives of children. When a family breaks in two, children who stay in touch with both parents must travel between two worlds, trying alone to reconcile their parents often strikingly different beliefs, values, and ways of living.
Both presenters not only understand the realities and consequences of divorce but have a heart for what role church communities can play in touching lives of all affected.
