Focus on Families is a study performed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which is the government department responsible for collecting and publishing official statistics about the UK's society and economy. The study compares family types and explores similarities and differences between them. It also examines the relationship between families and health, unpaid care and education.
The total number of families reached 17.1 million in 2006, but the number of families headed by a married couple fell by half a million between 1996 and 2006, to just over 12 million. At the same time both lone-mother and cohabiting couple families increased so that both family types now total 2.3 million each.
The full reports from 2007 and 2005 are provided for free to download in PDF format, as are the related press releases, tables, and summary reports. Topical summaries are provided regarding cohabitation, unpaid care, partnership and education, health, children's qualifications, and family demographics.

Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC)
The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), also known as 'Children of the 90s,' is aimed at identifying ways in which to optimise the health and development of children. The goal of the study is to understand the ways in which the physical and social environments interact, over time, with the genetic inheritance to affect the child's health, behaviour and development. The European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC) is a European version of the study with the cooperation of Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
The Study's web site lists ALSPAC related bibliographic information on completed theses, books, monographs, both unpublished and published papers which can be found in peer-reviewed journals, some including abstracts. Detailed results of their studies on topics such as the mental health of parents and child temperament can be found via the Scientific Web link.
